OK, it is no secret that I have used some sort of flash in almost every macro photography image I have ever taken. Why? I love maximum depth of field and while I love natural light photography, the 3 days of the year it is calm enough to photograph outside just weren’t enough! All kidding aside, most “natural light” macro photography with maximum depth of field is done inside where everything is controlled and you have to be on a tripod. I am guilty of resorting to this technique often myself but I do love being out in the field. The wind is generally too strong on most day and many locations do not allow you to bring a tripod. That is why I embraced the power of flash. I have used many varieties of flash for my macro work including a Speedlights, twin lights, and old ring lights so I jumped at the chance to try out my Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Flash to see how it stacked up to those flashes. The image at top is one of the first I took and you can see just how close to the flower I got and the macro flash illuminated the bloom very nicely at that close range.

What is the difference between all the focal lengths of macro lenses? Besides the obvious price difference, it comes down to weight. User manual hp officejet 5610 all in one. All are incredibly sharp. You have to ask yourself this question; will I be photographing insects? If the answer is yes, then you want to look at either the Sigma 150 or 180mm lenses. Insects do not like you approaching them too closely. If no, then the 105mm is a very good option and it is the lightest too. One obvious benefit of the extra focal length macro lenses becomes clear when you are at a location that has ponds with flowers that are a bit further out towards the center. The image above from the New York Botanical Gardens is a good example. That water lily was about eight feet away from me and the Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Flash still had more than enough power to fill light it. Don’t overdo your flash!
Which brings me back to the weight. Another questions you should be asking yourself; how heavy is the lens/body combination and can I handhold it with a flash attached? The #1 reason I went to the Sigma 150mm F2.8 Macro lens instead of the 180mm F2.8 Macro is that the new 180mm lens weighed more than my old one and the 150mm was almost identical in weight to the old 180mm. I can hand hold that setup comfortably for a long time although as I get older, I do like to rest it either in a small bag or on the camera strap when not shooting. Many places do not allow tripods and handholding is the only option and that is why the weight should definitely be one of your considerations before buying any of the lenses. Take your camera body to a store and place one of the lenses on it. Add a flash and judge for yourself which lens is right for you. They are all tack sharp! Below is an image of the setup I use for handholding.

I have usually recommended you do macro photography on a bright overcast day. Why? The soft light eliminates any harsh highlights and provides the best overall illumination. Hit it with a bit of flash, generally powered down, just to give it a bit of pop. The amount you power your flash down will depend a great deal on distance to subject and the color of the actual bloom itself as your meter will get fooled. I was able to power down the flash on the images above even though I was pretty far away because the flower was light. In the image at the very top, I had to power the flash up to +1 to illuminate it properly. I generally don’t change my settings, just the power output of the flash although I do tweak it to get the correct exposure. But what do you do when you get to a location and it is sunny? The answer is the same; turn your flash on! In my next life, I am coming back as a weatherman. I can’t even count how many times I left for a macro shoot after checking the weather to go out on a bright overcast day only to have it be mostly sunny when I arrived!!! Turning your flash on seems contradictory to what you would think but that is only because you are considering the sun as a main light source. When you arrive in a location and it is sunny, severely underexpose for the natural light and power your flash way up. Look at the image below. A white flower in sunlit conditions is generally considered a nightmare. Change your thinking at look at think of the sun as only a fill light. Power your flash up and shoot away. The powered up flash is acting as the main light while the sun just highlights and fills.

Both of the images below were photographed using the same technique I just had to power the Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Flash at different levels but both on the plus side to keep the sun as fill. A bright sunlit day will challenge and flash unit and the Sigma macro flash passed the test with flying colors.
My conclusion: I found the Sigma EM-140 DG Macro Flash just as easy to operate and control as my Canon twin lights. You can vary the power output on either side (which I never do), so very similar to the twin lights. I did find that the twin lights had a bit better throw distance than the Sigma macro flash but given that it as less than half the price of both Canon and Nikons twin lights I feel it is the best option for those looking to take their macro photography to the next level at a much more practical price.
